I’m honored to share that I’ve recently joined the board of Grow the Flow, an organization dedicated to restoring and protecting the GreatSalt Lake.
Like many others in Utah and across the West, I’ve watched with growing concern as the lake has declined—its shoreline retreating, its ecosystems collapsing, and its dust storms threatening public health. But I’ve also witnessed a rising movement. Scientists, farmers, faith leaders, artists, and everyday residents have come together, united by a simple truth: we can’t thrive without the lake.
My own journey into this cause began behind the lens of a camera. Over the past three years, I dedicated myself to capturing the lake's magnificence. This work culminated in the creation of Preserving Greatness, a collection of hundreds of photographs that reflect not just the lake’s visual splendor, but also its deep significance to our landscape, our wildlife, and our way of life.
A major reason I was drawn to Grow the Flow is its Executive Director, Dr. Ben Abbott. Ben is a professor of environmental science and sustainability at Brigham Young University, with a background in water shed science and ecosystem ecology. His research spans from Arctic permafrost toUtah's water systems. What sets Ben apart is his ability to bridge science and community action. He’s not just publishing papers—he’s organizing rallies, briefing lawmakers, and building coalitions. Under his leadership, Grow theFlow has become a unifying force, bringing together scientists, policy makers, and citizens to work towards a common goal.
As a board member, I’m committed to helping strengthen this bridge-building mission. I’m here to amplify the voices of people who care deeply, whether they’re managing water on a farm, raising a family in the SaltLake Valley, or advocating at the Capitol.
We all have a role to play in restoring the Great Salt Lake. And together, with clear-eyed urgency and a belief in shared stewardship, I believe we can turn this story around.
If you're not already familiar with Grow the Flow, I encourage you to explore their work. Better yet, get involved. Because saving the lake isn't just an environmental issue—it's about protecting our health, economy, heritage, and future.
Let’s grow the flow of water to Great Salt Lake and let’s preserve what makes Utah great.
